Awards

Awards provide the opportunity to recognize superior individual, team or organization efforts. Recognition can be honorary, non-monetary and/or monetary; written or verbal. Most awards can be given to individuals or groups/teams. The number of opportunities and ways to reward employees is wide and ranges from very informal (a “kudos” letter or email) to office celebrations (for peer awards for example) to formal award ceremonies (such as the NASA Honor Awards ceremony).

Awards can be given for sustained superior performance or outstanding efforts on one-time projects or special teams, as well as for exceptional performance in areas such as customer service, initiative, time and cost saved, difficulties overcome, improved quality, better results, increased efficiency of the business process, and teamwork.

At Goddard, awards can be very broadly divided into two categories: Incentive Awards, those awards which are directly within the purview of the manager or supervisor, and Center-wide Awards for which there is a formal, grassroots-based nomination, review and selection process. Within each of these categories, there are a variety of award types that can be matched to the particular effort deserving recognition. In determining the appropriate type of award, it is important to consider the award type that might be most valued by the performer and whether the award is proportionate to the scope of the act.
