Senior Executive Service

The Senior Executive Service (SES) covers most managerial, supervisory and policy positions which are classified above the GS-15 which do not require Senate confirmation. An SES member:

(1) directs work of an organizational unit;

(2) is held accountable for the success of one or more specific programs or projects;

(3) monitors progress toward organizational goals and periodically adjusts such goals;

(4) supervises work of employees other than personal assistants; and

(5) exercises important policy-making, policy-determining, or other executive functions.

The SES has 6 levels, each with a single rate (no steps). Only the Center Director or the NASA Administrator can approve advancement to higher levels.

The Seniors Executive Association is an excellent resource for information on those issues that affect the career executive service as a whole.
