Introduction

Developed by the Goddard Committee for Working to End Domestic and Family Violence

Domestic and family violence (henceforth domestic violence) is a serious problem that can no longer be ignored by NASA Goddard. Violent or abusive relationships, once thought to be sad, but private matters, are now serious concerns for the victim, the victim’s family and friends, and the victim’s workplace.

Domestic violence can follow a victim or perpetrator to their place of work and result in incidents of workplace violence. Due to the significant number of violent relationships in the United States today, it is safe to assume that the victim or perpetrator of domestic violence may be your friend, co-worker, or any other individual that you come in contact with at work or in the community.

Before deciding that you are not involved in a violent/abusive relationship, or that you know of anyone involved in such a relationship and therefore don’t need to read this information, consider the statistics regarding domestic violence.   The reality of domestic violence, is that anyone at work may be impacted by violent relationships at any given time.  It is therefore essential that we learn to recognize the warning signs of violence in order to prevent and/or respond to violence appropriately.
