New Supervisor's Curriculum

Engaging with Others

Overview: This course covers on of the fundamental elements of supervision in the areas of core interpersonal communication skills: There are three focuses for this program:

  1. Effective Advocacy: Getting Your Ideas Across
Knowing how to communicate ideas clearly and accurately can avoid potential costly miscommunications. This is a skill that focuses on the need to be clear regarding tough (i.e complex and/or sensitive) communications that can be prone to misunderstanding by employees.

  2. Effective Feedback: Giving and Receiving Feedback
Participants would learn the skills for delivering feedback as valuable, understandable information and for offering it in a straightforward, objective manner that is most readily understandable and usable by others. In addition, participants will practice the are of paraphrasing the messages of others which ensures a clear understanding of another person's view.

  3. Effective Inquiry: Getting Good Information from Others
To tap most effectively the valuable information that others hold is the skill of asking high quality questions. This assures access to more sound information which allows for higher quality decision making.

The Engaging With Others program could be waived if supervisor has taken an equivalent program. Please contact Kathy Hefferin at 301-286-8319 if you are eligible for a waiver.
