Special Programs and Initiatives

This page contains information on programs or courses related to GSFC-wide or Agency wide Initiatives. The Goddard training office does not necessarily arrange for or administer all of these classes, so please check with the sites listed for current contact information.

Exploring Leadership Colloquium Series

The Exploring Leadership Colloquium series brings speakers of interest to Goddard approximately 6 times a year.  The general focus for the series is NASA’s organizational values and the role values play in leadership and implementing organizational and cultural change.  In particular, this year’s focus is on building community, creating a learning based culture, and encouraging transformational conversations.

Integrated Enterprise Management Program (IEMP)

The Integrated Enterprise Management Program (IEMP) is an agency-wide transformation of NASA's financial, physical, and human resources management systems and processes to improve NASA's fiscal and management accountability. The vision for IEMP is to build a modern, leading edge business system that will: provide the management information needed for mission success; meet the information needs of internal and external customers; support compliance with external regulatory guidance; and promote standardization and integration of business processes and systems across NASA.  Extensive training has been developed for this Program. The latest information on IEMP training can be found at: http://ifmpinfo.gsfc.nasa.gov/index.cfm.

Information Technology (IT) Security Training

The Center’s IT Security Training curriculum was collaboratively developed by the OHCM, the Information Technology and Communications Directorate (Code 700), and with critical input from the Directorate Computer Security Officers (DCSOs). It is updated often and addresses NASA policy and security plan generation as well as ways to secure data, software, systems, and networks incorporating cutting-edge tools and approaches in an ever-changing field.  Courses are prioritized by Code 700 representatives and recommendations for attendees are solicited through the DCSOs.  For the latest information on IT Security Training, please contact Karla Kahler at 301-286-5378.

Sciences and Exploration Directorate (SED) Research Fellowship Program

The SED Research Fellowship Program is a new Center funded research opportunity for GSFC civil service scientists designed to develop and enhance scientific expertise, and foster key strategic partnerships with the scientific community. Research fellowships can take place at any sponsoring organization external to GSFC including Universities, industry, other NASA centers, and other Federal Agencies. The location can be domestic or international.

Fellowships are for a minimum of 3 months up to a maximum of 12 months.  A fellowship provides full salary coverage. Contiguous fellowships are preferred, but fellowships that are broken up over a given interval will be considered. There are three opportunities each year to apply for a fellowship (Nov 1, March 1 and July 1). Associated travel expenses should be covered through reimbursable funds in kind from the host organization, or via direct funds from existing research programs or projects. Some small amount of travel funds may be available to cover incidental expenses that cannot be reimbursed externally because of ethics rules and regulations.

The program is open to all research scientists who have been civil servant employees for a minimum of 5 yrs. The minimum time between fellowship awards is 5 yrs. The expectation is that up to 5 fellowships will be awarded each year.

Applications must include: 1) The research program to be undertaken; 2) The benefit of the research program to NASA strategic goals; 3) The benefit to the employee; 4) The proposed duration, budget and any matching funds from external or internal sources; 5) A reentry plan after the fellowship is complete; and 6) Endorsement letters from the employees supervisor and the sponsoring institution. The page limit for the application is four pages (excluding endorsement letters). Applications should be submitted by email to the Director of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate.
